With “Seeds of Change” as the conference theme, PSEWeb 2024 focused on innovation and progress. A perfect venue to learn more about how those pushing digital forward in higher education are thinking differently.
The event was held in Olds, Alberta (<1 hour from Calgary) and brought together digital communicators and marketers in particular from Canada. The program was well curated and avoided the current trap of only talking AI, but rather packed with sessions covering most of the moving parts at the moment, including sessions on social media, internal communications, digital marketing, journey mapping and reducing your university’s digital carbon footprint.
I gave a presentation on how we might make digital smarter, safer and more sustainable based on insights from our peer group meetings in both North America and Europe.
Before moving onto my talk (see further down for recording and slides), let me share a few other highlights from my conference experience.

We all have a responsibility to make sure we are implementing green, responsible systems of the future.
In a recent member's call, Andy Eva-Dale from UK-based digital agency Tangent shed light on ICT emissions and where we sit as an industry in the global carbon emissions story.
As the Technical Director at Tangent, Andy mentors a 45+ strong department, creating cloud-first, scalable, robust, secure, globally distributed applications. Andy is active in the community, championing sustainable system design, diversity in tech and dyslexia awareness
In the call he took us through “10 Do’s and Don’ts of Sustainable Systems” with actionable ideas and features of green system implementation and design. He also drew attention to the parallels between performance, scalability, cost saving and carbon with real-world metrics from some of the projects they’ve delivered at Tangent. In addition, we looked at what the big hosting platforms are doing to tackle the problem, as well as how best to measure your systems from a carbon and cost perspective.
As a final bonus, Andy provided a brief progress update on the new Umbraco Sustainability Team.

Worried about climate change? Not sure what to do, and not sure how to speak with friends, family and colleagues about it?
Talking about climate change and personal choices can sometimes lead to challenging discussions.
In a recent member’s call we heard from Nina Horstra, Climate Coach and UX Research Manager at Booking.com in the Netherlands. At work she focuses on the topics of sustainability and accessibility. In her spare time, she has completed a training program to be a certified climate coach.
We covered insights on living a sustainable life, guilty pleasures, and how to take others along on the journey. There were also a few practical tips that you can apply in your day to day life and in conversations, but we started our wonderful journey somewhere else.

While sustainability is not a new topic in our member calls, we've mostly talked about how to create low-carbon websites, how to be smart about cloud computing and somewhat more technical angles.
Recently, Oslo-based digital leader Katrine Sundbye joined one of our local peer group meetings as a guest speaker and took a different angle in her session:
“We need digital to meet the sustainability goals!”
In a recent member call, Katrine shared her thoughts with the community. She introduced us to the green growth model and the ReSOLVE framework by McKinsey. She also shared examples of how data and digital solutions are key enablers for keeping resources in use more and longer.

As you might already know from following our work, the information communications technology (ICT) sector contributes ~4% of global greenhouse gas emissions – this is equivalent to global aviation.
In a recent member call hosted by Leah Goldfarb from cloud hosting platform Platform.sh, she explored how to reduce your carbon footprint in the cloud quantitatively. She also unpacked what information is needed for a carbon audit in the cloud, Platform.sh’s approach to carbon calculations, and concluded with how a shared-responsibility model will help us minimise carbon emissions.
Leah works as Environmental Impact Officer at Platform.sh in Paris. She is a certified Climate Leader and belongs to the “Climate Reality Leadership Corps”. Al Gore, the 2007 Nobel Prize winner, trained Leah to give informative presentations on climate change and how to address this issue, which affects all of us.

If you think that going green on your website is just something for the few, you are not the only one. Still, while it might be a relatively new requirement for many, and we still have a long way to go, there’s change afoot.
According to Hannah Smith, who works as Operations and Training Manager for the Green Web Foundation, customers increasingly care about environmentally sustainable digital leadership and it’s no longer just a novelty to think about the green web.
In the UK, Hannah is seeing large and complex organisations integrating sustainability into their procurement for digital services. Joining us in a recent member call, Hannah shared case studies and examples on how her team is accelerating the transition to a fossil-free internet.

“Making sustainable digital services is not a tool or code problem - it requires us to human better”
With this thought-provoking quote, Hannah Smith set the stage in her highly rated talk at the HE Connect 22 conference in Manchester.
Hannah is the Operations and Training Manager for the Green Web Foundation, a non-profit with a clear mission: to make the internet fossil free by 2030. Her role is to ensure operations within the organisation are running smoothly, especially as they grow beyond start-up phase. Previously she was a freelance WordPress developer and speaker.
She’s based in Porlock, a coastal village in Somerset, England and also our expert of the month.

“Where you are based in the organisation matters much less today”
Do you need more why or are you ready for the how? Adam Feldt is Senior Manager, Digital Communications, Global Marketing and Communications at Topsoe, but as Adam says, titles in digital are of dwindling importance these days. What matters is how you can make an impact, in particular when it comes to sustainability.
Topsoe is a global leader in decarbonization technology, a complex B2B firm based just outside Copenhagen.
Topsoe has just executed a brand refresh to sharpen the focus on how the company is ready to do decarbonization at scale. Actually a brand refresh is some understatement; I would rather label it an award-winning global rebrand, including a complete overhaul of the digital channels. Adam was closely involved in this project as a digital leader and also has a fresh take on what comes next.
Adam is our expert of the month.

How are those who are leading digital thinking differently? From speaking to our community members in Europe and North America, it’s not the size of the technology stack, and it’s not about build vs. buy. It’s more about content, tech and people.
When asked about the key digital trends, it used to be easy to answer by just citing analysts, who would usually all point in more or less the same direction. The direction of travel so to speak would be the same across most analyst reports.
Times have changed, the future is now, and today we see a totally chaotic vendor marketplace, new categories coming up for software vendors and if you read updates from the analysts, it points in quite different directions. What does that mean to you as a customer?

Reducing and mitigating the impact of climate change is the key challenge of our time and designers have a vital role to play in reducing emissions and mitigating their impact. According to the UK Design Council around 80% of the environmental impact of today’s products, services and infrastructures are determined at the design stage.
In a recent member call, Val Mitchell introduced the work of the Thriving Planet team at Snook and how they are beginning to use the principles and practice of Service Design to consider the needs of our planet alongside the needs of organisations and users.

How do we create web pages from the lens of sustainability and how do we measure the carbon footprint of our digital presence?
At UK-based website governance vendor Little Forest, Managing Director Gavin Colborne and his team are working on a new open source project which will introduce a "Sustainability Score" for websites.
As he said in our recent member call:
“Similar to Google Lighthouse scores for accessibility, SEO and performance, the time has come to also be serious about sustainability as a digital leader.”

The subject line of the very first edition of the New Thinking newsletter by Gerry McGovern was ‘Massively parallel societies’ and opened like this:
Language is the invention of a co-operative society, and we wouldn’t be where we are today if we hadn’t co-operated.
This was on June 24, 1996 and Gerry wrote about how multimedia and the Internet would hopefully help us realize again that we are nothing without each other.
Since then his monthly newsletter has gained traction and readers around the world, including yours truly and he’s kept doing it now with a weekly dose of provocative and thoughtful insights.
Besides his newsletter, Gerry is perhaps even more known as the inventor of the Top Task framework, the author of several books and his relentless focus on helping organizations become more customer centric on the Web.
Recently his focus has shifted to sustainability with his most recent book titled World Wide Waste. Gerry is based in Ireland and also our expert of the month.

The Internet has a larger footprint than the airline industry, yet we continue to build new digital marketing campaigns, launch new domains, use high resolution for video calls and insist on impressive visuals on our digital presence.
Fortunately, thinking about website carbon reduction is actually win/win. James Cannings is Chief Sustainability Officer at digital agency MSQ and has been working with environmentally sustainable digital leadership for longer than most.
In a recent member conference call, he shared how sustainability also impacts our digital work, where to start, and the 3 layers in building for sustainability. In this post, you’ll find my notes from the call, slides, recording and links for your to make progress on your digital sustainability journey.
