Digital governance and standards can be more fun than you think

10:15 - 10:50

Led by Joyce Peralta (CA)
Manager, Digital Communications at McGill University

Well-defined digital standards can impact more than just the way websites are built. At McGill University they are a cornerstone of our digital governance framework and a key reference guiding departmental web strategies and cross-departmental collaborations. They’re also the foundation of a mindset from which members of our community - leaders, web managers and site visitors - share a common understanding of what makes an exemplary website, and by extension an exemplary web ecosystem.

This presentation will discuss our experiences building a digital standards community of practice at McGill and examine our takeaways and lessons learned. We’ll look at:

  • Ways we engage with departments and stakeholders across our university to continually evaluate and revise our digital standards.

  • How we ensure our tools evolve in alignment with our standards - and how facilitating alignment with our standards encourages the adoption of and loyalty to our tools.

  • How current topics of interest in our community - generative AI; sustainability; diversity, equity and inclusion  - are impacting (and not impacting) our digital standards.

Solving the Headless Observability Gap

11.10 - 11.45

Led by Seb Barre (CA)
Digital Platform Product Lead at TELUS

Join this session to hear about an un-obvious gap that exists in many headless environments. Seb will share work they’ve done at TELUS to add better observability to Contentful, specifically they needed help with understanding content performance - where content is used and how often - and also better tracking down of incidents and mistakes more easily.

In addition, they’ve also worked to give teams a better idea of what content their apps consume, and who else they are sharing content with.

As Seb says: This gap exists in headless environments but may be worse at enterprise scale, so join the conversation and bring home valuable insights to improve your content performance.

High stakes, low carbon - moving an industry to see less as more

1.30 - 2.30

Led by Mike Gifford (CA)
Senior Strategist at CivicActions

As an industry, we have a critical role to play in reducing our environmental impact. The demand for data centers and digital devices is contributing to rising carbon emissions, excessive water usage, and increasing e-waste. Yet, consumer demand still focuses on more features rather than on accessibility, usability, and performance. It’s time for a shift in priorities toward more sustainable digital best practices to lower our carbon footprint.

High-performance, low-carbon digital solutions are not yet a top client demand, but they should be. In this talk, Mike will explore ways of engaging with clients to better understand and value well performing sites. You will gain insights into how to incorporate these practices into their projects, ultimately contributing to a greener digital landscape.

Join us to explore the high stakes of digital sustainability and discover how we can collectively move the industry to see less as more, ensuring a sustainable digital future for all.

Don't lose your head - the case for the
All-in-One DX

1.30 - 2.30

By Kamruz Jaman (CA)
Founder of Konabos

In recent years, the rise of Headless and Composable DXP solutions has introduced a new way of building digital experience and marketing stacks. This shift has brought with it a host of new terms and added complexity. While Composable solutions offer flexibility, they also come with unique challenges that many teams are unprepared for or underestimate.

Despite the growing popularity of Composable DXPs, traditional All-in-One DXPs remain a strong choice for many customers. Modern All-in-One DXPs have evolved, addressing many of the issues associated with the monolithic systems of the past.

In this session, I'll share our experiences with both Composable and All-in-One DXP solutions.

Despite the current hype, a Composable approach may not always be the best fit for every customer or team. I'll delve into specific challenges and mismatches we've encountered, highlighting situations where an All-in-One DXP is the more suitable solution for addressing specific needs.

In this session, we’ll go on a brief walk through the history of search, focusing on the current state of the industry:
- What’s the impact of AI on search?
- What do we do when the next generation uses Tiktok for search?
- Is site search finally being something that marketers are able to update and analyze on their own?
- What’s happening with new search tools and how does it change our projects?

Getting more value out of your content

3.00 - 3.45

By Rebecca Wyatt (US)
Division Director of Technology Solutions at Enterprise Knowledge

Content is an important business asset, but there’s a lot more value in an organization than can be represented by its corpus of content.

In this session we’ll explore the intersection of knowledge and content management, and dive into the lateral discipline of Knowledge Management - what it is and the value it brings to an organization.

What types of information assets cross the boundary of content and represent organizational knowledge? What lessons can knowledge managers and content managers learn from each other?

We’ll ground those ideas with real world examples of CMS to capture, manage, and act on knowledge.

Universal CMS - the next generation of content management systems

9.35 - 10.15

By Preston So (US)
VP Product at dotCMS

At its core, content is about people.

Despite what sometimes overzealous JavaScript developers and architectural purists say, the content management system remains unique as a nexus of collaboration between disparate content and technical personas, all with their own prerogatives and goals.

The fact is that the CMS has stood alone in its ecological niche in the software world, bringing together people across the back office to work together to push the end user experience forward. Neither headless and composable CMSs, with their focus on developers, and hybrid-headless and monolithic CMSs, with their focus on editors, have an entirely clear answer for what the CMS's future holds.

That's where the Universal CMS comes in.

The Universal CMS paradigm restores the grand compromise that characterized the static web CMS era, with its excellent stories for developers and content editors as first-class citizens. The CMS of the future is universally editable, universally developable, and universally deployable, irrespective of the presentation layer—whether that means Vue.js or Vision Pro, Next.js or native mobile, Amazon Alexa or Angular, WebXR or WebAssembly.

Let's build the Universal CMS that honors the people at the center of all content. Are you in?

Semantics and content management

10.15 - 10.50

By Michele Ann Jenkins (CA)
Senior consultant at Dovecot Studio

The rapid growth of content has far surpassed the manual workflows and handcrafted pages of the past, yet many organizations still struggle with clunky, fragmented content ecosystems.

These issues are becoming more critical as AI tools come into the picture. This is where semantics, including metadata, taxonomy, and ontology, become essential to support a more holistic approach.

In this session, you’ll hear a quick overview of the elements that make up the semantic layer and learn how creating a rich, harmonized, network of defined entities and relationships supports information flow and reuse both within your content management system and across the organization.

We’ll look at case studies from basics like supporting search and automating content placement to emerging advanced techniques using knowledge graphs to support AI tools throughout the content lifecycle. Regardless of your starting point, a “pearl growing” strategy can provide a roadmap for quick wins, incremental improvements, and building foundations for the future.

The digital landscape is evolving faster than ever before. From monolithic to headless to hybrid and now universal, companies navigating this shift are naturally focusing on reducing cost and time to value. They are also striving to formulate strategies and processes that ensure operational efficiencies and success. This is particularly crucial for enterprises that manage multiple brands within a vast digital ecosystem.

In this session, we will showcase L’Oréal's inspiring and transformative journey as they:

  • Modernize and transition over 300 brand websites from diverse technologies to a unified and standardized platform.

  • Speed up migration, reduce associated costs, minimize operational friction, and ensure a smooth transition with minimal risk.

  • Create and industrialize a microsite factory that streamlines the creation of microsites for multiple brands.

  • Foster stakeholder buy-in, accelerate adoption, and deliver a unified digital ecosystem.

We’ll take a close look at how L’Oréal is leveraging AI innovation and Kajoo.ai, the digital experience builder that empowers enterprises to automate the modernization of their DXPs by significantly reducing development time and expenses.

Enhancing CMS Usability: Lessons from the Quebec Blue Cross

11.50 - 12.30

By Jean-Christophe Viau (CA)
Frontend Developer / Web UI Designer at Croix Bleue Québec

In today's digital landscape, the importance of user experience (UX) is universally recognized. However, in the rush to optimize for end users, many companies overlook a critical aspect: the real users of a Content Management System (CMS) are the content editors and managers. Providing an efficient, intuitive interface for these editors can significantly improve their work efficiency, speed, and overall satisfaction.

Most CMS platforms typically offer a limited set of editing interface fields, such as text fields, rich text editors, drop-down selectors, and asset pickers. These fields, while functional, often fall short of meeting the complex and diverse needs of content editors.

The Quebec Blue Cross encountered this very challenge and successfully addressed the issues their editors were facing. In this session, we will explore how they identified the problem areas and the innovative solutions they implemented to enhance their CMS interface.
