Our impact
Sharing is caring is something we’ve preached for over a decade as our community is all about helping each other and turning experience into advantage.
By helping our members, we empower them to do better and make a difference. Whether it’s about diversity & inclusion, sustainability or something else, we do our best to go beyond just connecting people, but actually following through to make a difference.
Clearly, members and the wider community at large, also sees us as role models and while we are not without flaws, we do work hard to make a positive difference.
Thorsten Jonas, founder of The Sustainable UX Playbook gave a memorable keynote at the Boye Aarhus 22 conference: How UX can save the world. As shown on the slide above, we shouldn’t wait for others to save the planet
People
We care about the people we affect and are committed to the wellbeing of both our team and community. Our entire existence relies on people. We’re a community of human beings and diversity and inclusion is close to our heart.
We show it by:
fair hiring practices
ensuring a fair and diverse mix of speakers at our conferences
not having all male panels at our conferences
regularly featuring the diversity and inclusion work of our members
featuring case studies from our global community, e.g.
Planet
It’s an amazing planet we live on and we want to do what we can to take good care of it. We show it by:
In 2023 we (finally) removed the plastic from our conference name tags. By printing on extra strong and sustainably produced paper from Plotteriet, we don’t need the plastic and as a personal touch, our conference participants can now write their own name and organisation.
no useless merchandise at our events and we reduce the amount of plastic wherever possible
travelling responsibly
bicycle over car, train where possible
staying at environmentally and locally responsible hotels. We’ve never used Airbnb
featuring the work of experts and practitioners alike that drive positive change for the planet, e.g.
The train between Aarhus and Copenhagen has a special place in our hearts. That’s our route to the capital and sometimes we run into friends, like on this occasion in March 2002 where Janus coincidentally had a seat next to the Danish author Louise Juhl Dalsgaard.
Community
The goal has never been to have the biggest or best community for digital leaders. That’s not our purpose. We are here to make a difference and hopefully be a good community for our planet.
We give back where we can and show it by:
Recruiting new blood donors on a sunny day in Aarhus
annual donations to charities, e.g. €1 every time someone fills out a speaker evaluation form
allowing staff to donate blood in work hours
we often use books as a gifts and always source these from our local bookshop rather than Amazon
